We get asked this a lot, usually with a slightly hopeful, slightly skeptical tone. So here's the honest answer, built from what we've actually seen on the job. 🤔
Old stains fall into two very different categories, and knowing which one you're dealing with changes everything.
Organic stains that haven't chemically bonded with the fibre Some spills, like certain food or drink marks, sit more on the surface of the fabric than deep in it. Even years later, the right treatment and enough dwell time can lift a surprising amount of these.
Stains that were never fully treated Ironically, some of the oldest stains are the easiest, because nobody ever attacked them with the wrong home remedy. A stain that's sat untouched is sometimes more responsive than one that's had years of failed DIY attempts layered on top of it.
Anything that's caused a chemical change in the fibre Sun fading, bleach damage, and certain dye reactions actually alter the fabric itself. No amount of cleaning brings back colour that's chemically changed or fibre that's degraded.
Stains treated with the wrong products over the years Bleach, ammonia, or high heat applied at home can set a stain permanently or damage the fabric around it. Once that's happened, cleaning can improve the area but won't fully erase it.
Ink, some dyes, and certain cosmetics These can bond very tightly with fabric fibres. Depending on the fabric type, full removal isn't always realistic, even fresh, let alone a decade later.
Any cleaner who tells you every old stain will disappear completely is overselling. What we can honestly promise is a significant improvement in the vast majority of cases, and straight talk if a mark is likely permanent before we start, not after you've paid.
Almost always, yes. Even stains that don't fully disappear typically fade substantially, and you'll never know what's possible until it's properly treated by someone who knows what they're doing.
